Community Support Fund
Papua New Guinea
In Papua New Guinea, the CSF funded projects were identified by working closely with the relevant provincial and national government authorities, Lihir Gold Mine landowners and impacted communities.
The procurement of medical supplies, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), medical equipment and education/awareness programs about COVID-19 provided support for the provinces of New Ireland, East New Britain, Morobe and the National Capital District.
The projects included:
-
On Lihir Island, two community health centres, plus nine smaller community health centres, were upgraded in partnership with the Nimamar Local Level Government.
-
Procurement and distribution of PPE to 22 provinces in collaboration with UNICEF and other major donors.
-
Procurement of ventilator equipment in collaboration with UNICEF and other major donors for the two largest hospitals in Papua New Guinea, ANGAU Hospital in Lae and Port Moresby General Hospital.
-
Support for St John Ambulance through training ambulance officers for the National Capital District and Morobe Province and the donation of an ambulance for their Lae operations in Morobe Province.
-
Support for the Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF) to deliver Project Airborne across New Ireland Province, which delivered resources and programs to 372 elementary schools during COVID-19. Training and education on the risks associated with the virus and vaccine awareness were provided for teachers to deliver to students and communities.
-
Support for the COVID-19 vaccine rollout across New Ireland Province. Through our support to UNICEF, the implementation partner Australian Doctors International is working closely with the Provincial Health Authority on the education, training of health workers and demand generation for the vaccine.
