Respect in the workplace
Everyone has the right to feel and be safe at work, and to be treated with respect and dignity.
At Newcrest, there is no place for any behaviours that cause people physical or psychological harm. Safety is not optional. It is a core value and a key foundation for the way we work.
We want a workplace that enables people to be their best and will continue to take positive and deliberate action to prevent and eliminate disrespectful behaviours from our workplace. We will do this with focus and urgency and, above all, care for those who have been impacted.
Our Respect@Work program
In May 2021, we established our Respect @Work program to strengthen our approach to preventing and eliminating sexual assault and sexual harassment across our operations.
We did this in response to important research undertaken by the Australian Human Rights Commission that highlighted the need for companies to tackle issues around sexual assault and sexual harassment and take action to prevent and eliminate harmful behaviours. It’s a critical focus point for Newcrest – across every country we operate in.
Since we established our Respect @Work program, we have implemented actions to educate our people about what sexual assault and sexual harassment is, how to raise and report concerns, and the support and care available to those who have experienced such behaviours. These include the:
- Establishment of our site Respect @Work working groups and Respect @Work information portal on the Newcrest intranet for our people.
- Implementation of capability building initiatives focused on Inclusive Leadership and vicarious trauma training for key staff across our global business.
- Establishment of dedicated trauma and/or support hotlines for workers across Newcrest
- Introduction of specialist counsellors for victims and perpetrators of sexual assault and sexual harassment, and domestic violence in Papua New Guinea.
There is more to do, and our work continues through our dedicated Respect@Work function to implement actions based on an independent examination of our policies and practices, which will ensure our framework to prevent and eliminate sexual assault and sexual harassment across Newcrest is robust.
Strengthening our workplace culture
For our people to be their best and for our continued growth, our culture must be one that embraces diversity as a strength, recognises inclusion as a powerful driver of progress, and where psychological safety is treated as importantly as physical safety. We have implemented a range of initiatives to support a more inclusive, diverse and psychologically safe workplace. These include:
- Inclusive Leadership program
- Gender targets and reporting
- Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Community of Practice, and site D&I Working Groups
- Flexible Work practices
- Inclusion Index, as part of our annual Organisational Health survey.
We are also establishing a program specifically focusing on psychological safety that enables our people to confidently speak up. We are applying the same principles and methods that have transformed our safety performance.
